I was sitting with Mister Death one day...well in the Paakeeha sense of death anyway...Wanting to ask questions.
With my courage finally plucked up enough, as well as the priority of the questions delicately constructed. I continued with my path.
"Mister Death" I asked timidly. "Why do we wait for death?"
"Why, do humanity wait for death? When, the fact of the matter is, that from birth all a person can and is doing is dying?"
Mister Death asked for an example. Feeling a little more confident, with the advent of a response, I ventured on. "When "we" have an estimated time limit destowed on us by the supposed "Medical Profession" The waiting is compounded by what we can do with that time. Yet, we're waiting, Why?"
"What about istant death?" Mister Death inquired.
"Whether its a car crash or choking on a bone....death up until the time it occurs, and more so when it does occur is present in "our" minds. Although, it may not have been apparent to the person dying. Sadly, that persons death is a reminded to others that they too, will "pass on"...So, why wait for death?"
At this point I felt passion for what I was in pursuit of..."When, as a family you are given the news that your father has less than 7 weeks to live, if that. Why wait for death?"
By now my curiousity, had turned to enthusiasm, my enthusiasm had turned to passion, my passion had turned to anger. I continued..."When, your nephew is swept into the ocean by a "FREAK" wave, to drown. WHY DO WE STILL WAIT FOR DEATH?"
Mister Death looked at me...spying the tears roll down my face. Reaching out to me with stick like movement, quietly pulling me in close. While in his embrace Mister Deaths whispers in my ear...
"My dear Child...Thats a question for Life."

That is the question. Death is the great releaser on one hand, and the instigator of great suffering on the other. It instills fear and pain and confusion and anger and sometimes a kind of rare joy. We all know it will come to us one day, but most of us resist it, choosing to hold on to a life that we've spent most of it bitching about. It's the big controversial elephant in the room. But I think, despite our fighting for reason and understanding, despite our fighting to stay alive (which has its merits), the only thing we can really do is accept it because not one soul on this earth can escape it and that's what unites every living thing.
